Weird Alley

This project includes a poster and typeface, all based on the prompt: “The World’ s Largest Ball of Twine ” . Darwin, MN has a street named “Weird Alley ” , which is borrowed for the name of the typeface. The poster is fifteen inches wide and twenty inches tall. A ball of twine is shown in the top right corner with a trail of twine looping down the poster as if the ball had begun unraveling. T ext follows the length of the twine; each letterform is slightly skewed as if the motion of the twine unraveling had jumbled them. Horror movie posters from the “‘50s ” , like Tarantula and The Blob, influenced the poster because of the strong sense of narrative created by the use of scale and implied motion. These elements help bring the ball of twine to life rather than depicting it as a static object. An analogous color scheme of greens and yellows references the color of twine and the agriculture I associate with small towns in the Midwest. The typeface is based on the irregular and organic letterforms of hand-painted signs, some of which are used around Darwin, MN, to advertise the ball of twine.
